Harry (6) and Jessica (5) are currently living with foster carers and waiting for a home to call their own.
Caritas Care is working alongside its partner Adoption Matters to find a forever family for brother and sister, Harry and Jessica, who are currently in foster care.
These siblings have been waiting longer than other children due to a national trend showing that siblings and older children (over the age of 4 years) often wait longer for their forever family.
Six-year-old Harry attends a school for children with additional needs and has made exceptional progress since moving in with his foster carers. So much so, his reading skills are now excellent for his age.
Sister Jessica, aged 5, attends the same school as Harry and has also made significant progress to the point that plans are in place to move her to a mainstream school.
Susan Swarbrick, Head of Children’s Services at Caritas Care, said: “We’re looking for adopters with a good network of support around them, and ideally two parents. Some experience of children either through family, voluntary or professional roles would also be good.
“Both children have been placed in a school dedicated to their needs, but both are making amazing progress. Jessica likes and enjoys attending school – she is eager to be involved with everything so the move to mainstream school will be a great step for her.”
Full training and a package of ongoing support, including financial, will be offered to the children’s future family.
Harry and Jessica are part of a wider picture – 64% of children waiting for adoption in the North West are siblings, while the figure is 61% nationally.
Babies and younger children are often placed with an adopted family much quicker than older children and siblings, as the desire to be present for baby’s ‘first moments’ such as learning to walk and talk is prevalent.
Susan continued: “Adopting older children and siblings like Harry and Jessica brings with it a whole new set of firsts, such as their first day at school and learning to ride a bike.
“We’d encourage people looking into adoption to always consider older children as they’ve already started to form a personality and are just looking for a family to love them for who they are.”
